Overview
The situation
Finding a reliable home service professional in Canada was broken. Homeowners spent hours calling contractors, receiving inconsistent quotes, and dealing with no-shows and unreliable communication. Service providers, on the other hand, had no efficient way to find qualified local leads or manage their pipeline without paying for expensive, low-quality lead aggregators. Quote It was built to fix both sides of this problem — a true two-sided marketplace that brought transparency, trust, and speed to the entire home services transaction, from first post to final payment.
Challenge
What we had to solve
Building a two-sided marketplace from scratch is one of the hardest product challenges in software. Both supply and demand had to be onboarded simultaneously — a platform with no jobs is useless to service providers, and a platform with no service providers is useless to homeowners. Beyond the cold-start challenge, the core UX problem was significant: the homeowner flow needed to feel as simple as posting an Instagram photo, while the service provider dashboard needed to be powerful enough to manage leads, quotes, scheduling, payments, and client communication professionally. Both audiences had to be served at the highest level across web, iOS, and Android simultaneously.

How we built it
Product Discovery & Market Mapping
We conducted deep discovery sessions with both sides of the marketplace — homeowners frustrated by the existing contractor search process, and service professionals struggling with lead quality and volume. We mapped the full job lifecycle from both perspectives: how a homeowner describes a job, what information a contractor needs to quote accurately, and where trust breaks down on both sides. This research directly informed the data model, the notification architecture, and every micro-interaction in the quoting flow.
UX Architecture & Dual-Role Design
Using Figma, we designed two completely distinct user experiences within a single platform — a homeowner-facing job posting and booking flow, and a professional-facing lead management and quoting dashboard. The homeowner flow was optimised for speed: take a photo, describe the job in plain language, and post in under 60 seconds. The service provider dashboard was built for daily professional use — live job feeds by category and location, one-tap quote submission, in-app messaging, scheduling, and earnings tracking. Both experiences were prototyped to high fidelity and tested with real users before a single line of code was committed.
Backend Architecture & Real-Time Infrastructure
The Node.js backend was built with Firebase as the real-time data layer — enabling instant push notifications to service providers the moment a matching job was posted in their area and category. The job matching engine used location radius, service category, and provider availability to surface relevant leads without overwhelming inboxes. A credit-based connection model was architected for service providers — pay-as-you-go credits or subscription plans — with a 'Top Quote' feature giving providers the ability to boost visibility on competitive jobs. All payment flows were built with full transaction history and direct client-to-provider payment routing.
React Web Application
The React web platform delivered the full marketplace experience for both user types — homeowners could post, manage, and track jobs from any browser, while service providers could manage their profile, subscription, lead credits, and full quote history from a responsive web dashboard. The web app was also the primary onboarding surface for new service professionals, with an ID verification system and profile builder designed to build trust with homeowners before the first job was ever quoted.
iOS & Android Mobile Apps
The mobile apps were the primary surface for homeowners — snap a photo, post a job, receive push notifications as quotes arrived, and book the best pro without leaving the app. For service providers on the go, the app delivered real-time job alerts, one-tap quoting, in-app client chat, and appointment scheduling. The v6.0 release was a complete UI redesign — a ground-up rebuild of the interface that delivered a faster, more modern experience that the platform had been building toward for years. Both iOS and Android versions were submitted and maintained through App Store Connect and Google Play.
Monetisation, Ratings & Launch
The monetisation model was built around service providers — free to sign up and receive leads, with a credit system to unlock client contact details and a subscription tier for high-volume professionals. A post-job ratings and reviews system was implemented to build trust on the platform over time, with verified reviews tied to completed bookings. A 'Pause Job' feature was added for homeowners who needed to temporarily hold a listing, and an enhanced ID verification system gave homeowners confidence in the professionals they booked. The platform launched across web, iOS, and Android simultaneously — live across Canada and expanding to the USA.

Building a two-sided marketplace is incredibly complex — you're essentially building two products at once and making them talk to each other in real time. The team understood that from day one. The platform has gone through six major versions and it keeps getting better.
