Overview
The situation
The founder came with a deeply personal mission: build an Islamic app that goes beyond prayer times and Quran reading into something more spiritually motivating. Most existing apps treated ibadah as a checklist. Nawa was conceived as a companion — one that connects daily acts of worship to their eternal rewards, making the unseen feel tangible and the spiritual journey feel alive.
Challenge
What we had to solve
The Muslim app market is crowded with feature-heavy tools that overwhelm users or strip the spiritual experience down to utility alone. The challenge was to build something that felt authentically Islamic in its philosophy — rooted in niyyah (intention) — while still being modern, beautifully designed, and genuinely habit-forming. Every feature had to serve the akhirah, not just the dunya.

How we built it
Research & Spiritual UX Mapping
We interviewed 18 Muslim users across different levels of practice — from new reverts to lifelong practitioners — mapping their daily spiritual routines, pain points, and motivations. The core insight: users wanted to feel connected to the purpose behind their worship, not just reminded to do it. This shaped the entire product philosophy.
Core Architecture & Firebase Setup
We set up the React Native foundation with Firebase Auth for secure accounts, Firestore for real-time habit and deed tracking, and Firebase Remote Config for dynamic content updates — allowing new adhkar, duas, and Quranic content to be pushed without app store releases. Offline-first architecture was prioritised so the app works reliably during travel, in mosques, or anywhere with poor connectivity.
Habit Tracker & Heatmap Engine
We built the Islamic habit tracking system with a GitHub-style heatmap calendar — daily prayers, Quran reading, dhikr, fasting, and custom habits all tracked with visual streak data. An AI-powered consistency analyser was integrated to detect drop-off patterns and surface personalised nudges: if a user consistently misses Fajr, the app surfaces relevant duas and gentle reminders contextually rather than generically.
Jannah Rewards Visualiser
The flagship feature: a visual representation of a user's accumulated Jannah rewards — trees, palaces, rivers, and treasures — each tied to authentic Hadith about specific good deeds. We used an AI content pipeline to cross-reference deeds against verified Hadith sources, ensuring every reward displayed was traceable to authentic Islamic scholarship. The visual layer was designed to feel aspirational and serene, not gamified.
Quran, Dhikr & Duas Library
We integrated a full Mushaf with authentic Arabic typography, bookmarks, and reading progress. The adhkar library — morning, evening, and situational duas — was curated strictly from Quran and Sunnah, with Arabic text, transliteration, and translation. The 99 Names of Allah were built as an interactive learning module with meanings and reflection prompts. An AI search layer allows users to find relevant duas by situation or emotion.
Prayer Times, Qibla & Launch
Accurate prayer times were implemented using location-based calculation with multiple method support (MWL, ISNA, Egypt, Makkah, and more). A native device compass powers the Qibla direction feature. We launched on iOS with a free core tier and Pro subscription ($1.99/month or $12.99/year) covering advanced habit analytics, unlimited custom habits, and the full Jannah visualiser. The app launched in 12+ languages with full RTL Arabic support.

I wanted to build something that reminds you why you're making sujood, not just that you should. Nawa connects the act to the reward — and that changes everything about how consistently people actually practice.
