Overview

The situation

The founder came to us with a clear conviction: if young children are going to have screen time regardless, it should genuinely move them forward. Grolearn was built as an antidote to the overstimulating, ad-riddled landscape of kids' apps, a calm, focused learning environment for early learners, designed with parents firmly in control.

Challenge

What we had to solve

The edtech market for young children is saturated with subscription-heavy, notification-driven apps that prioritise engagement metrics over actual learning outcomes. The challenge was to build something philosophically different, a one-time purchase app with no ads, no dark patterns, and genuine pedagogical value, while still making it compelling enough for children to want to return to it voluntarily.

Case Study

How we built it

01Weeks 1-2

Research & Positioning

We conducted parent interviews and competitive analysis across the top 20 kids' learning apps on the App Store. Two patterns emerged clearly: parents were exhausted by subscription fatigue, and children were being overstimulated rather than engaged. These insights anchored every product decision that followed.

02Weeks 1-2

Curriculum Architecture

Working with early childhood education references, we mapped a modular topic system covering core early learning domains — letters, numbers, shapes, colours, and reasoning. Each topic was designed to be independently toggle-able by parents per child, allowing truly personalised learning paths without complexity.

03Weeks 2-3

UX & Visual Design

We designed for two audiences simultaneously: children aged 3–8 who needed clear, rewarding interactions, and parents who needed to trust the interface. The result was a calm, low-distraction visual system — no autoplay, no flashing rewards, no push notifications — validated through usability sessions with five parent-child pairs.

04Weeks 3-5

Gamification & Motivation Layer

Rather than gamifying learning itself, we built a structured reward loop: learning points unlock mini-games. This kept the educational content clean and purposeful while giving children a genuine motivation to complete lessons before play. Daily limits enforced by the parent controls layer ensured healthy usage patterns.

05Weeks 5-6

Offline Infrastructure & App Store Launch

Full offline functionality was engineered so the app works reliably without Wi-Fi — critical for family travel and screen-time flexibility. We handled App Store submission, metadata optimisation, and category positioning, launching on iOS with a lifetime purchase model and zero in-app monetisation.

I built this because I couldn't find anything I actually trusted putting in front of my own kids. It had to be calm, honest, and genuinely educational, no tricks. That's exactly what ElevenSoftwares helped us ship.
